Youth Education

Church of Our Saviour has a tradition of deep commitment to the spiritual formation of its children and youth.

NURSERY (Ages 3 and Under)

Nursery care is available from 7:30 - 12:00pm every Sunday and at other events/services on an as needed basis.

ATRIUM (AGES 3- 12)

The Atria meet Sunday mornings from 10:00 - 11:30am, during the school year. Our Sunday morning Christian formation is rooted in Sophia Cavalletti’s Catechesis of the Good Shepherd curriculum; a way of approaching children’s religious formation which allows them to interact deeply with the Bible and the liturgy, utilizing the educational principles of Maria Montessori.  Our children explore these things in “atria” (rooms), especially prepared for them based on their respective ages. The materials in the atria have been made by members of our congregation to be used in presentations for the children and then by the children in a hands-on, meditative way.

The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd’s USA website asks us to think of our children’s spiritual life in this way…

“If an adult hears a beautiful…Bible passage, the adult might read it slowly…think deeply about the words…speak to God in a thankful prayer.  A little child…needs another way.  In an atrium the child can ponder a biblical passage or [a moment] in the liturgy by taking the material for that text and working with it – placing wood figures of sheep in a sheepfold…setting apostles around a Last Supper table, or preparing a small altar…Older children may also copy parables from the Bible, place prayers in order from the rite of baptism, or label a long time line showing the history of the kingdom of God.”

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is a rich and varied spiritual programming for our younger children.  The individual atria are facilitated by our talented catechists, a number of whom have dozens of years of experience, not only as catechists, but as catechesis trainers at the national level.  We are truly blessed to have this quality of spiritual formation for our young children.

JR./SR. HIGH (AGES 13-18)

As our youth move on to Junior High and High School, their Sunday programming has a greater focus on the exploration and expression of the individual’s developing faith.

Our junior high Sunday classes use the Rite 13 Curriculum, an approach to spiritual exploration specifically geared to youth of that age.  The junior high youth have a long-standing relationship with Heifer International, and raise money every year for that organization.  They also enjoy monthly Youth Group gatherings, which are primarily social in nature, as well as the occasional “lock-in” and participation in Diocese-wide events with other youth of their age.

Church of Our Saviour’s High School youth meet weekly on Sunday mornings, as well as Tuesday evenings. Sunday discussions are often grounded in the study of a text.  Recent examples include C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters, and The Great Divorce, as well as Madeleine L'Engles's Wrinkle in Time along with accompanying spiritual and biblical resources and conversation about the issues explored.

The high school youth group has a long-standing commitment to service, having taken service trips to Appalachia or the Gulf Coast every summer for the past quarter of a century.  This service trip is a hybrid – combining days spent doing home repair and nights spent doing retreat activities.  Every spring, the members and friends of Church of our Saviour look forward to the “ASP [A Service Project] Dinner”, the high school youth’s fundraiser for the summer trip, and an opportunity for the entire congregation to hear stories of the past summer’s trip, enjoy a beautiful meal and live music, and participate in live and silent auctions which help to raise funds for the upcoming trip. The senior high youth also participate in Diocese-wide events with other youth of their age, and the national “EYE” (Episcopal Youth Event) which occurs tri-annually.
