Why was the COS Antiracism Committee created?
In passing Resolution F-185, the Diocese of Chicago resolved that each parish should form an antiracism committee to work to become The Beloved Community. We are asked to identify, disrupt and dismantle racism within ourselves as a congregation and in the community at large. We are asked to create a courageous space, take responsibility and respect the ability of those who cannot participate. You can learn more about the important work this congregation is doing toward racial reconciliation, healing and justice.
What is the ARC Charter?
Charter of the Antiracism Committee
By the authority of Church of Our Saviour Episcopal Church Vestry, the antiracismcommittee is charged with guiding our church to fulfill our antiracism vision bycarrying out our mission. This includes formulating for vestry review an annualplan, a budget for anti-racism activities, and an annual report.
What is the Mission of the ARC?
Our working definition of Racism is:
Racism = Race Prejudice + The Misuse of Power by Systems and Institutions
As a majority-white congregation, we recognize our particular responsibility to confront and repent of the ways racism has shaped our lives, our church, and our community. We commit to the lifelong work of racial justice, knowing that this journey requires humility, courage, and a willingness to continue learning and unlearning.
What is the Vision of the ARC?
Grounded in the love of Christ and our baptismal covenant, Church of Our SaviourEpiscopal Church envisions a parish where the dignity of every person is honoredand where racism, in all its forms, is actively identified, disrupted, and dismantledknowing that this work is not separate from the gospel but central to our call tofollow Jesus and to help build Beloved Community.
We seek to become a parish where:
-
The humanity of people of color is fully recognized, honored, and celebrated
-
Power is shared equitably
-
We confess and learn from our failures
-
Our systems and practices are transformed to reflect these values
