Information on ways to serve and volunteer at Church of Our Saviour Caring for one another is a fundamental part of building a community of faith. There are lots of ways that you can participate in the ministries of Church of Our Saviour, and you are needed! Below are some of the ministry opportunities to serve the needs of this particular spiritual family. Simply contact us with something you're interested in supporting and we'll connect you with the right folks to get you started. You can complete a volunteer form here if you are interested in getting involved! Liturgical Ministry Worshiping God is at the center of our life together at COS and each service requires a variety of roles so that the liturgy (or "work of the people") flows smoothly and offers those present a wonderful experience as they worship. A few of those critical volunteer roles are listed below. If any of these align with your own spiritual gifts, please sign up and help us make worship even more beautiful! Greeters (Ushers) Often the first face guests see on Sundays, Greeters greet guests, offer a worship bulletin, help them find seats and restrooms, and assist with the offering plate and attendance. This person should feel comfortable welcoming strangers and friends alike. Lectors (Readers) A Lector is lay person trained in reading scripture who is appointed by the clergy person in charge of the congregation to read lessons or lead the prayers of the people. The term is from the Latin, “to read.” There is no special requirement for this ministry so all are welcome! This person should feel comfortable speaking in public and will be able to review the readings ahead of time to prepare. Children are also welcome to volunteer for this role. Acolytes An Acolyte assists with the liturgy in the Sanctuary and has a long history within the church. They often vest in a white alb (robe) and process in with the clergy and sit in special seating near the altar. Acolytes at COS are responsible for lighting the altar candles, holding the Gospel Book for the Deacon, assisting in setting the altar for Communion, ringing the Sanctus bells, and providing other general assistance during the service. Training is provided for this role. This person should be comfortable standing in front of a crowd and sitting up front in the church, and they should be able to move in calm and solemn manner. Children are also welcome to volunteer for this role. Altar Guild The Altar Guild is a volunteer group of the parish whose ministry is to care for the altar, candles, vestments, vessels, and altar linens of the parish. Altar Guild members prepare the sanctuary for services, and clean up afterwards. Altar Guild members frequently assist with the decoration of the sanctuary for holidays and special services. This person should enjoy cleaning and organizing, have an eye for detail and order, and can enjoy working solo. This is also an ideal role for someone who doesn't mind bringing home some linens from time to time to launder and iron. Hospitality Ministries Offering hospitality is a holy act of love and COS likes to offer hospitality any chance it gets! If you enjoy hosting, cooking, visiting others, or sending greeting cards, then these opportunities are right up your alley! Coffee Hour Host Coffee hour follows the 10am Sunday services. The Coffee Hour Host offers to provide some food to share. We provide the coffee setup and you simply drop off your food before service. It can be as simple or elaborate as you wish! This person can enjoy hosting parties or simply pick up food to share with others. Angel Food COS loves to care for it's own. When someone may find themselves facing a difficult moment such as the loss of a loved one, or a transition between jobs, or an illness, Angel Food Ministers provide a meal or two to help ease the stress and let you know you are loved. You can also offer to assist in other ways, if you are not a cook. This person should either enjoy cooking for others, or be willing to help with simple chores or errands when someone is in need. Lay Eucharistic Ministers COS provides Communion to people in their homes for those who aren't able to join church gatherings. We can train you to be a Lay Eucharistic Minister and you simply pick up some reserve sacrament to bring to someone in their homes and share some simple prayers with them. Lay Eucharistic Ministers travel in pairs and should be comfortable visiting with others, possibly strangers, and able to travel. COS Greeting Cards Everyone enjoys receiving a greeting card! If you enjoy writing cards to folks then ask about our COS Cards ministry. We try and reach out to members of the congregation to check-in, celebrate a milestone, or wish them well. We'll even provide the stamps. This person should be able to write clearly and be organized. Serve the Church

Information on Church of Our Saviour minitries that reach beyond the city of Chicago and ways to volunteer or support. The history of outreach at Church of Our Saviour extends far beyond the borders of Chicago. Below are some of the broader outreach programs COS is involved in. Please complete the Volunteer Form to get involved or contact the office with any questions. Mission Trips “Be,” “Know,” “Do” are three important concepts at Church of Our Saviour. It is vital to our common life that we ‘be’ people who pray, who study Scripture, and both corporately and individually reside in the Christian life. It is important that we ‘know’ each other, because to make Christian community and to faithfully love one another we must know our fellow community members (and be known by them). But to really live out our Christian commitment, we must ‘do.’ ASP (A Service Project) - Youth Group Trip For over three decades, the senior high youth group and adult sponsors have traveled to areas experiencing severe poverty in Appalachia and severe destruction in the Gulf Coast following hurricanes and tropical storms. This service trip is a hybrid – combining days spent doing home repair and nights spent doing retreat activities. The youth are divided into work teams, each with at least one adult sponsor, and tackle things as varied as replacing a rotted floor or adding needed insulation to a home. (Sometimes while trying to avoid angry insects!) Every spring, the members and friends of Church of Our Saviour look forward to the “ASP Dinner”, the high school youth’s fundraiser for the summer trip, and an opportunity for the entire congregation to hear stories of the past summer’s trip, enjoy a beautiful meal and live music, and participate in live and silent auctions which help raise funds for the upcoming trip. Chiapas, Mexico Among the important outreach activities in our parish is participation in an informal coalition with members of several Chicago parishes working together as the "Chiapas Project" in the Chicago Diocese Companionship relationship with the Diocese of Southeast Mexico. This coalition includes four parishes in Chicago: St. Chrysostom's, Church of Our Savior, Church of the Atonement and Holy Comforter (Kenilworth). Since being charged in 2010 by Bishop Benito with the support of his diocese missions in Chiapas, members of the Chiapas Project have made annual visits to two missions in Chiapas: St. Benito de Nursia in St. Cristobal, and St. Marcos at Yochib in the Mayan highlands, as well as occasional visits to two children's homes: the Hogar Infantil in Ocozocoactia and the Mision Mexico in Tapachula and providing much needed funds for education grants, building supplies, and other materials. Our “Mission of Presence”in the Chiapas communities has taught us new meanings of "mission" in which our presence and our worship with our fellow Anglicans has been mutually enriching. Parishioners in Chiapas remark on the meaning they derive from our repeated visits: "Your coming back makes you part of us and that gives us strength." "Coming from such a distance to worship with is, we see as an affirmation of God's presence in our midst." Currently, COS is a major supporter of weekly health delivery classes in Yochib. Volunteer opportunities for Church of Our Saviour programs in the city of Chicago. Church of Our Saviour has a long history of community service and outreach programs. If you are interested in volunteering for any of our outreach programs, please complete the Volunteer Form or contact the office with any questions. If you are interested in volunteering with any Care For Friends programs, please click here to be taken to their page for more information. Care For Friends and COS In the Summer of 1968, Church of Our Saviour opened its doors to shelter young people from the violence surrounding the Democratic National Convention riots in Lincoln Park. In the ensuing decades, this support from a single organization blossomed into a wide-ranging network of strong community partnerships that came together to support Chicago's most vulnerable, which we have come to identify as our friends. Together, this diverse network of strong connections provides a wide range of services which were organized and formalized under the umbrella of a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2012. Initially known as the 530 Fullerton Foundation, the organization rebranded in 2016 as Care for Friends (CFF) to better describe the scope of services offered. Care For Friends works towards a future where access to food, housing, and healthcare is the reality for all and remains a strong community partner of Church of Our Saviour. As a community hub, CFF tackles Chicago’s food, housing and healthcare crises through an all-inclusive, no questions asked approach to providing easy access to critical resources. They aim to earn the trust of our guests and break down the barriers preventing them from connecting to the services they need. Another result of the ongoing partnership between Church of Our Saviour and Care For Friends was able to replace the church's old parish hall with the new Parish Commons building. With the completion of this project, Care for Friends now has a new Community Hub on the lower level which houses their programming at COS. ReVive Center for Housing & Healing ReVive Center for Housing and Healing, located in Chicago's Near West Side, was established in 1915 by Rev. Gibson whose calling was to social services work with immigrants and the poor on the West Side of Chicago. Rev. Higgins joined ReVive in 1929, the year the Great Depression began, and the work of providing shelter, clothing, food, and other services expanded. Rev. Higgins founded ReVive's addictions program in 1958 and soon thereafter ReVive’s Higgins House became the first halfway house in the State of Illinois for people who struggled with alcohol use. ReVive acquired the property now known as Cressey House in 1970 to provide additional housing and in 1998 Cressey House became one of the first permanent supportive housing programs in the State of Illinois. Throughout its history, ReVive has listened to and responded to the needs of the individuals and the community it serves. Church of Our Saviour has partnered with ReVive for many years, supporting their annual Christmas Basket program. Each summer, ReVive volunteers record the wish-lists of families and senior citizens in need. COS sponsoring households provide at least one gift per person and a grocery gift card to provide Christmas Dinner for the family. These gifts are gathered, wrapped, and offered to households in need during the Christmas season. Serve the City

  • End of Life | Chicago | Church Of Our Saviour Chicago

Information on End of Life ministries at COS and general descriptions for funeral/memorial service planning. End of Life Funerals & Memorial Celebrations The clergy at Church of Our Saviour is always ready to offer solace and comfort for those who experience the loss of a loved one, and to work with you to provide a suitable funeral or memorial service. When death takes away a beloved friend or family member, We believe that there are three ways to respond: Grieve the loss of a person who will be sadly missed; Celebrate their life and the enduring gifts they have left behind; Pray them into heaven, enshrouding them in their new experience with the comforting love they knew here. Our bereavement counseling and public worship services honor all three of these important manifestations of loss. At the Time of Death Sacramental moments help mark the various transitions in life, including the last one. Anointing is offered at any time of poor health or strain in an individual’s or family’s life. It is especially important when an illness has been deemed terminal or a physical condition becomes dire. Both the Episcopal Book of Common Prayer and individual ministers at COS offer a variety of ways to prepare for the final passage of life. Please contact the office for more information. Planning a Service Among the many concerns that strike family and friends following the death of a loved one is planning a suitable public gathering. The Episcopal Church provides beautiful and rich Christian services that are readily adapted to individual circumstances. The clergy and office can assist with any planning the family may desire.
